B CORPORATION

Wes Griffin, Executive Director of B Local PDX, is smiling.

“There’s a small, benevolent trick to B Corp… the certification proves you use business as a force for good, but the process reveals your roadmap toward better. Welcome to a community of businesses that inspire each other to keep raising the bar.”

WES GRIFFIN

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, B LOCAL PDX

B stands for Benefit for all: working on changing our economic system to positively impact all stakeholders - workers, community, customers, and our planet? Definitely!

B CORP?

“We envision a global economy that uses business as a force for good. This economy is comprised of a new type of corporation – the B Corporation – which is purpose-driven and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. As B Corporations and leaders of this emerging economy, we believe: that we must be the change we seek in the world. that all business ought to be conducted as if people and place matter. That, through their products, practices, and profits, businesses should aspire to do no harm and benefit all. To do so requires that we act with the understanding that we are each dependent upon another and thus responsible for each other and future generations.”

That was our goal since day one.

Chocolat-e is now a  B Corp certified. But it’s not an achievement, it’s just the beginning of an exciting journey towards continuous improvement and collective action.
We’re a work in progress.

ethical & sustainable sourcing

There’s no need to hide the fact that the cocoa industry can be a dirty business. Customers know – or should know – the real price of their guilty pleasure. Transparency is part of being a better company
We chose Valrhona to source and supply our cocoa beans because they not only provide the best selection and cultivation of fine cocoa but they use the best practices to contribute to a more sustainable and ethical cocoa sector.
Valrhona is a B Corp since 2020.

sustainable PACKAGING

Chocolat-e offers gourmet chocolate in cardboard boxes and incitates his customers to reuse the packaging, buy refills instead of boxes to minimize cost, waste and carbon footprint. Not always a popular move, but this is the right thing to do. And we’re working on sourcing greener materials at the best affordable cost.

LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS

This is pretty tricky to get involved in the local community when your main ingredient/product is coming form abroad. We believe in partnerships. We believe they’re the key to growth and success. We partner with people – before their company – who share our values, our vision of entrepeneurship and our commitment to sustanability.

FRANCIS KUNDU -EXILIOR COFFEE. His 100% single-origin coffee beans from Kenya are exquisite.  His commitment to sustainability, ethics and fairness keep us very humble.
Exilior is B Corp since 20XX.

BOB WOODRY – PREMIUM GROWERS. The company grows hazelnuts out of Salem, and rare thing, roasts themselves. This makes a huge difference between a good and a great hazelnut!

KIM ALLCHURCH – MIGHTY EPIPHYTE. Kim is a connector, a fantastic advocate for social enterprise. She’s our B Corp advisor and member of our advisory board. She’s a great example for us in promoting local and the community.
